Pool Light Replacement and Upgrades

The proliferation of LED (light emitting diode) technology has vastly changed pool lights from the dangerous objects that they used to be. Modern pool lighting equipment is not only safer and protect against electrocution through the use of transformers and GFCI circuit breakers, modern pool lights can change colors adding a great ambiance to your pool or spa.

Pool Lights Have Changed

Modern LED pool lights and their colors can also be controlled from your mobile phone through an internet connected automation system.

Additionally, old pool lights used to be 120-volt objects that were a severe safety risk to swimmers had the ability to electrocute swimmers if the seal broke. Modern pool lights are 12-volt lights and are protected by both a transformer which reduces the voltage to non-lethal levels and also are GFCI protected at the circuit breaker.

Pool Light Safety

Is YOUR pool light protected by a 12-volt transformer? If not, we recommend closing your pool immediately until you can have one installed.

GFCI Circuit Breaker – An important safety feature of modern pool lights

Notice the small push button on the circuit breaker? They can be different colors and sizes: white, black, grey, yellow. But if you have a GFCI breaker it will have a “Test” button on it that when tripped will turn off the breaker. This is an essential safety feature that protects that circuit from being able to accidentally cause someone to be electrocuted should an appliance plugged into it connect with water or the ground.

GFCI stands for Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter. Essentially, a GFCI circuit breaker is an extra layer of safety protection designed to protect against and electrocution event. When working properly a GFCI circuit breaker will switch the electricity off to an appliance when and if the current flowing through the circuit simulates electrocution.

This safety feature is KEY for pool lights as they are submerged underwater and if the watertight seal on a pool bulb were to be damaged or temporarily bumped out of perfect alignment it could send electrical current into a pool.

With a GFCI circuit breaker AND a 12-volt transformer, pool lights are rendered much safer, as 2 separate systems would have to fail for a danger to occur.

Note: It is important to make sure your pool equipment has GFCI outlets to the pump, pool light, and electrical outlets that are within 20 feet of the pool.

Have you looked at your pool equipment to ensure it is up to code?

Are YOUR pool lights AND pool pump connected to a GFCI circuit breaker? If not, we recommend closing the pool immediately until you can have that repaired. It is important to make your pool safe and to keep it that way.

We happily will take a look at your equipment to perform a complimentary safety check. Contact us for a free, no-obligation inspection.
